Repeated exposure to certain substances can lead to dermatitis or other types of skin irritation. If detected early and corrective action taken, the problem can be effectively controlled.
Early intervention can also help to identify areas within the workplace likely to cause skin irritation.
These are the high risk jobs for skin problems:
- Health services
- Metal machining
- Motor vehicle repair
There are certain substances which can contribute to the causes of Occupational Dermatitis:
- Epoxy resins
- Latex rubber chemicals (even ‘protective’ latex gloves!)
- Soaps and cleaners
- Metalworking fluids
- Wet work
- Corrosive and irritating chemicals
Skin surveillance will usually take approximately 15 minutes per person and includes completion of a questionnaire, examination and skin care advice.
